Chopsticks for Students

Bamboo tree

Using chopsticks is more than just a cultural practice; it is fine motor skill development, cognitive benefits, and brain activity improvement. Currently with technology everyone wants things now. The use of chopsticks will teach us patience. One uses 50 muscles and 30 joints while using chopsticks, which is great for brain development.

Brain Chop advocates for public schools to incorporate chopsticks during lunchtime, encouraging diverse eating habits and fostering sustainable practices. Join us in our mission to inspire positive, lasting change within school cafeterias.

As a nonprofit organization serving Coos and Douglas Counties in Oregon, Brain Chop is dedicated to expanding its impact. Our goal is to broaden our reach nationwide, bringing our vision of sustainability and cultural awareness to schools across the country for a brighter future.

History, where did the dream come from?

Disposable Cutlery

When my son was around two years old, I became concerned that he might be falling behind developmental milestones,  due to chronic ear infections. Motivated to support his brain development, I researched effective methods to stimulate growth. During this search, I discovered information highlighting the benefits of using chopsticks. From my experience, I believe that incorporating chopsticks into his routine not only aided his brain development but also helped him achieve those important milestones. I now feel compelled to share the positive impact of chopstick use with others.

How Brain Chop Works ...

Students in grades K-8 will have the option to use training chopsticks. These chopsticks are dishwasher safe, but it’s important to remove the silicone figureheads before washing. To maintain organization, two separate containers will be provided: one for the chopsticks and another for the silicone figureheads.

For students in grades 9 through 12, there will be an option to use either metal or wooden chopsticks. The shop class will actively participate by crafting wooden chopsticks, providing a hands-on learning experience. Collaboration between the science and shop departments can create an interdisciplinary project where students produce wooden chopsticks from various timber species.

Although bamboo is commonly regarded as the superior material for chopsticks, this project encourages students to question that assumption. By experimenting with different woods, such as Quercus macrocarpa, students can explore the unique qualities of each species and potentially discover new, effective alternatives. This approach promotes critical thinking and allows for innovative uses of lesser-known timber varieties.

Get to Know Us

Initially, my son was reluctant to use chopsticks. I realize this might be controversial, but I’d like to share my experience. When he was around two years old, I established a simple routine: every Sunday afternoon, he could choose two snacks of his liking on the condition that he used chopsticks to eat them.

Gradually, he became comfortable with the chopsticks and started to enjoy using them. Interestingly, using chopsticks to eat snacks like chips significantly reduced mess, as his fingers stayed clean throughout. This approach not only made learning fun but also helped develop his fine motor skills in an engaging way.
